Early morning departure for Jaipur, known as the “Pink City”, the capital of the state of Rajasthan and a historical jewel of India. Founded in 1728 by Maharaja Jai Singh, Jaipur is a pre-modern city divided into six quarters, separated by broad avenues about 34 metres wide. The city, built in pink stucco to emulate sandstone, acquired its distinctive colour in 1905 as a gesture of hospitality to the Prince of Wales. Since then, pink has been a symbol of Jaipur’s warmth and welcome. After our arrival, we will enjoy a well-deserved rest before embarking on an afternoon of exploration, visiting some of the city’s most iconic monuments.
In the morning, we will head to the spectacular Amber Fort, one of the seven wonders of India, brimming with history and a unique fusion of Hindu and Muslim styles. We will ascend on the back of finely dressed elephants to immerse ourselves in an unforgettable experience. During our guided tour, we will explore one of the most impressive forts in the country, replete with palaces, pavilions, gardens and halls that dazzle with their beauty and grandeur. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, offering a unique perspective of the region. We will marvel at the mirrored palaces, whose interiors are illuminated by the light of a candle, transporting us to a world of luxury and splendour. On our return to the hotel, we will approach the majestic Palace of the Maharajas and its fascinating museums, completing a day full of discovery and wonder.
Fatehpur Sikri, built between 1571 and 1585 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in honour of the Sufi saint Salin Chishti, is a walled city that served as the capital of the Mughal Empire for 14 years before being abandoned due to water shortages. With its magnificent architecture that fuses Hindu and Islamic styles, this historic city continues to captivate visitors. After exploring Fatehpur Sikri, we will continue our journey to Agra.
The Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world and the iconic symbol of India, is known as the “Crown of Palaces”. This funerary monument, built between 1632 and 1653 in the city of Agra, tells the tragic story of Emperor Shah Jahan’s love affair with Mumtaz Mahal. We will marvel at this unmissable architectural marvel before heading to the nearby Agra Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. This magnificent complex reflects the rich history and exquisite architecture of India under the reigns of three Mughal emperors: Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Depending on travel plans and subsequent flights, we will either spend the night in Agra or head back to Delhi.
In the morning, we will depart by train to the city of Jhansi. We will then continue our journey by car or bus to Orchha, where we will have the opportunity to visit the magnificent Raj Mahal Palace. In the afternoon, we will drive to Khajuraho, known as the city of India’s most exquisite and stunning temples, famous for their erotic figures. These temples were built between the 10th and 11th centuries by the Chandela kings.
In the morning, we will explore some of the 22 erotic temples in Khajuraho, famous for their sculptures known as “mithuna”. In the afternoon, we will fly to Varanasi, also known as Varanasi in Hindi. This holy city is one of the seven sapta Puri of India and one of the 21 holiest cities in the world. Varanasi has more than 100 ghats along the Ganges River and is home to some 23,000 temples. Once there, we will head to the banks of the Ganges River to witness the evening ceremony known as “Aarti”, a beautiful offering of light and flowers infused with indigenous aromas.
At sunrise, we will head to some of the temples of Varanasi and then embark on a leisurely boat ride on the Ganges River. From the boat, we will be able to witness the purification rituals that take place along the ghats, as well as enjoy a spectacular view of the temples that line the banks of the river. As an optional extra, we will have the opportunity to visit Sarnath, the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon. There we will explore the historical ruins, visit the local museum and admire some of the temples.
If your flight departs tomorrow, you will have the morning free to explore Varanasi at your own pace or to relax before your departure. In case your flight departs the next day, we offer hotel accommodation so that you can rest and prepare comfortably for your journey. If you require an airport transfer, we will be happy to arrange this for you.
In the morning, after breakfast, we will drive to Delhi or continue to Varanasi if we have opted for the extension. We will pick you up from your hotel and start our journey by visiting the majestic Jama Masjid, India’s largest mosque located in the heart of the ancient city. We will then proceed to the Raj Ghat, the site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated, followed by a scenic drive along the Raj Path and the iconic India Gate. We will continue our exploration with a visit to the Birla Temple, the impressive Qutab Minar Minaret and the historic Sikh Temple “Gurdwara Bangla Sahib”. Our day will be filled with visits to various temples and monuments until nightfall.
