This excursion takes us to discover the beauty of the Chovar area, Sierra Espadán, in Castellón! We will find one of the most characteristic landscapes and vegetation of Spain, thanks to its red soils full of silica. In addition to its special nature, Chovar has a wide cultural offer… This municipality has deep-rooted Muslim origins, but you probably know it for the water that is produced here!
The town centre is located on the slope of a hill called Punta de la Sartén. At the top you can still see the ruins of a Muslim fortress that stood on this spot and served as a watchtower to keep watch over the area around the town. The upper part of the village, a legacy of the first settlers of the municipality, the Muslims, is full of winding streets and in the centre of the village is the church of Santa Ana. You can also visit several ponds and the washing place near the town.

The Nevera de Castro and the corresponding geodesic vertex (856m), the highest point of the entire route, is reached after descending the ravine and crossing a thick cork oak grove.
The gradual rise of the path allows us to contemplate the impressive reddish-orange stone cliffs, which stand out against the green surroundings. There are many cinnabar mines along the route, which still have some wagons on the outside. All of them are the remains of the Hemblar mining complex, now abandoned. In general, the route allows you to climb gently and find many perfect places to take spectacular photos 😉
