Lagos de Covadonga
We could not miss a stop at the Covadonga Lakes, of which there are three: Lake Enol, Lake Ercina and Lake Bricial. There are also legends about these lakes… there is a legend that tells that, on a stormy night, a disoriented young girl was looking for a hut to take refuge in, but all the families mocked her and refused her entry, and only one family took her in. The next morning, all the houses in the area were flooded, except for this last family. Thus Lake Enol was born, and this young woman would become the Virgin of Covadonga. In fact, interesting sites are the Holy Cave and the Basilica of Covadonga. But basically, these three lakes are a paradise for cyclists and lovers of flora and fauna.
Pico de Europa
The Picos de Europa, spread over 11 countries, are the only inhabited nature park in Spain and therefore offer visitors a unique experience, thanks to their exceptional landscape. It is also home to two of Spain’s most emblematic animals: the brown bear and the Iberian wolf. And the perfect place for our trail and hiking travellers 😉
Santander
Santander, capital of Cantabria, nestled between Spain, Portugal and the Basque Country, has 400 km of beautiful beaches, eucalyptus forests, jungle forests, rolling hills, landscapes of cultivated fields up to the high mountains of the Pico de Europa. There are many attractions worth visiting in this town, such as its highest peak, Torre Ceredo, where delicious artisan cheeses are also produced! But it is also a key stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, thanks to the Monastery of San Toribio de Liébana, which preserves the silver and gold cross enclosing a portion of the wood of Jesus’ cross, ‘Vera Cruz’.
Ribadesella
The Asturian town of Ribadesella is rich in tradition and history, combining the waters of the river Sella, the Picos de Europa and the Cantabrian Sea, three of the most distinctive features of the region. The town, once one of the most important ports in Asturias, is today a top tourist destination on a national scale and is home to a number of attractions that make it a very attractive stop on our route along the Northern Way. And if you walk a little way, to the cliffs of Tereñes, you might even see dinosaur footprints!
Río de Sella
In this beautiful river of 66km, the most important of the Eastern Asturias, we will do our kayak tours.
Llanes
Llanes will be able to surprise you with its fishing port that transports you to one of the town’s sources of wealth for centuries, or the marvellous Paseo de San Pedro over the cliffs. The town can also boast the most artistic port in Spain with the Cubos de la Memoria (Memory Cubes), the work of Agustín Ibarrola, which act as a breakwater on the quay. It is also worth visiting the Casino building and the abundant and beautiful Indian architecture scattered around the city and its surroundings.
Oviedo
Oviedo was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Asturias. It is considered the ‘capital’ of pre-Romanesque art and history and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its monuments, culture and scenic wonders. It is also an essential stop for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. We cannot forget to mention that Oviedo is the capital of apple cider, and Llaviada street is the ideal place to taste cider, in one of the many cider bars, traditional Asturian taverns.
Parque Natural de Somiedo
The Park is located in the so-called “Iberia Hmeda”, which is characterised by frequent rainfall, humid air, lots of clouds and mild winters and summers. This temperature has given rise to vegetation with an abundance of beech, oak, birch, cool valley bottom forests, alder and holm oak woods, among other tree species. In fact, the Natural Park is home to all the important mammals of the Cordillera, as well as a wide variety of other species.
Cudillero
Cudillero is located some fifty kilometres from Oviedo. The layout of the houses, which, perched on the mountainside, form a kind of amphitheatre whose stage is the Piaza de la Marina. Added to this are the bright colours of the façades of the houses, which blend in with the dark rock, the green of the surrounding vegetation and, finally, the sea on the horizon. This explains the beauty of Cudillero. One of the most popular attractions of Cudillero is the route of the viewpoints, in fact, starting from the main square, stairs and alleys wind between the colourful houses and lead to several viewpoints.
We have carefully chosen our hotel to be comfortable and conveniently located between all the places we will visit. This hotel, Hotel La Pasera, is located in Cangas de Onís, in a privileged enclave, surrounded by the air of the Picos de Europa. It offers comfortable rooms and a swimming pool and SPA.
The rooms are triple and if you want a double or single you can request it but with a supplement.
