It is the second most populated municipality in the Valencian Community and offers a perfect combination of modernity and historical culture. Here you can also relax on beautiful sandy beaches, renowned throughout Spain.
Come with us to discover the ancient castle of Santa Barbara, a ubiquitous landmark for tourists and locals alike. The castle overlooks the Gulf of Alicante at 166 m high and is the largest medieval fortress in Spain dating back to 1300. Climbing up to the castle you can not miss the Santa Cruz district, one of the most characteristic neighborhoods of the city. Here you will get lost in the narrow streets and you will not stop taking pictures of the beautiful colorful and unique houses intertwined with each other.
In addition to the charming old town, you can visit the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria, built over a former Moorish mosque, and the Renaissance Church of San Nicolas with the nearby Monastery of Santa Faz. Here you will find the chapel judged to be the most beautiful in the country in baroque style and the “Veil of the Veronica”, an ancient sacred relic.
At the end you have to stroll along the famous “street of mushrooms”, to transform yourself into Alice in Wonderland, and also along the promenade of the Esplanade, which will enchant you with its beauty and its palm trees.
Playa de San Juan
La Playa de San Juan is one of the 566 beaches in Spain that have been awarded the Blue Flag by meeting enviromental, educational, safety and accessibility criteria. The Blue Flag is the highest international award a beach can receive for sustainability.
The paradisiacal San Juan beach stretches from Cabo de las Huertas to the municipality of El Campello. It is with its impressive length of 7 kilometres fine sand and clear water the most popular beach of Alicante and the perfect place to spend a relaxing day. Along the promenade there is a great of restaurants and leisure areas for you to discover.
