XATIVA & ALCOI
Alcoi captivates visitors with its historical significance, cultural richness, and the exuberant celebration of its traditions, making it a unique and intriguing destination within the Valencia region of Spain.Renowned for its industrial past, particularly its prominence in the textile industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, Alcoi boasts a rich cultural heritage. The city is famous for hosting one of Spain’s most celebrated festivals, the Fiesta de Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians Festival), held in April. This vibrant event commemorates the city’s history through colorful parades, reenactments, and lively festivities that showcase the fusion of Moorish and Christian cultures.
Xàtiva is a town near Valencia, 25 km from the Mediterranean Sea. In the 12th century, the Arabs manufactured paper and this allowed the city to be known as one of the first European centres of paper manufacturing and education.
It later became a centre for the most powerful families of the Renaissance: the House of Borgia, which produced Popes such as Calixtus III (Alfonso de Borgia) and Alexander VI (Rodrigo de Borgia).
The castle is one of the most beautiful things in the city, it is located in the Castell mountain range and was the scene of many battles. The castle surrounds the city and despite its Iberian and Roman roots, most of the current walls and towers are of Islamic or Gothic origin.
